Chapter Twelve

The starting point for the town trolley was by the playhouse where Main Street crossed over the canal. It was easy to spot Judd’s red hair against the green backdrop of the trolley. I bought a ticket at the stand and waited in line to board. The seat right behind the driver was available and I slid into it. The trolley was only half full and most people favored the seats toward the back, just like on a school bus.

“Newberry started as a riverside village that eventually grew large enough to qualify as a town,” Judd was in the midst of telling the middle-aged woman to my right. He pushed the glasses back to the bridge of his nose.

“What’s that old building I passed on the left coming from the bridge?” she asked.

“Town Hall,” he said. “The original building dates back to 1839 and the plot of land was bought for one dollar. At one time, the building also served as the jail as well as the police department. A real multi-purpose space.”

“Fascinating,” the woman said.

He checked the area surrounding the trolley and closed the door. “Welcome to Newberry. I think we’re ready to roll. My name’s Judd and I’ll be your trolley driver today.”

The woman leaned across the aisle toward me. “I’m Lynne. Where are you from?”

“Here,” I said. “You?”

“Milwaukee. I’m visiting my brother and his wife in Doylestown, but they’re both working today.” She frowned. “Why are you riding the trolley if you live here?”

“I’m new in town. I thought this would be a good way to get the lay of the land.”

The woman smiled. “Good thinking. It’s adorable around here. I’m looking forward to a train ride later.”

Dane had told me about the train to nowhere. It basically traveled through scenic countryside and looped back to Newberry.

“To the right is Perry House,” Judd announced, stopping the trolley in front of the historic house. “Walter Perry was one of the founders of Newberry and a very important figure in our history.”

I knew all about Walter Perry thanks to spending the night in that very house when Patrick was hired to exorcise a ghost that didn’t want to leave.

“Such beautiful architecture here,” Lynne mused.

“Too bad we missed the turkeys,” Judd said over the loudspeaker. “That’s always cause for excitement.”

I didn’t mention my role in their capture.

The trolley slowed to another stop in front of the canal museum.

“Trolley leaves again in ten minutes, folks,” Judd told everyone. “Meet back here or you’ll have to walk back on foot.”

People filed out and I waited until I was the last person so I could speak to him alone. I vacated the trolley and waited for him at the bottom of the steps.

“Great info,” I said. “I’m new in town and I love learning the history.”

“It’s a cool place. You’re going to love it here.”

I hated to admit it, but my gaze instinctively dropped to his trousers to see whether the thumbtack had been symbolic of his size. It was too hard to tell in the loose khakis he wore.
